Hi Carol,
It has taken me almost two years since becoming a master trainer to find a way to get my staff involved with the program. Everyday is a constant battle it seems, where some are excited there are others who don’t take it seriously. What I have done is made it mandatory monthly training; there are 7 power points on the portal and each staff member must attend one of those lessons at least once a month (1 1/2 hour classes offered at 9am and 3pm on the same day of each month), if they miss more than 2 months of training (and it doesn’t have to be consecutive months) they are issued an attendance point (6 points is termination). There are a total of 125 staff that I track and train on my campus; in addition to the dementia simulation room where each staff member is required to participate in.
Sometimes it’s like herding cats but don’t give up, you will find what works for you.
Hi Carol!
It’s is hard for me also. I am training my entire company. I am doing multiple 2 hour sessions that covers; what dementia/Alzheimer’s is, Life Story, communication, validation, behaviors, and The Knack. When we start our units, I will be doing more focused presentations. I’ve been crazy busy, but the staff are impressed with the idea and the methods of Best Friends and want to implement the system.
I wish you luck and have a wonderful Thanksgiving 🙂
