The Best Friends Master Training Institute Fall 2019


The Best Friends™ Institute is a two-day course to become a Master Trainer in the relationship-centered Best Friends™ Approach to Dementia Care. This training will teach you how to train others in the Best Friends™ Approach.

Registrants of the Best Friends™ Institute must have prior knowledge of the Best Friends™ approach. If you are new to Best Friends, see our Introductory Training options. $1,575.00* per person. This fee includes completion and scoring of the pre-test, 2 days of instruction by Expert Leaders, all training materials, and take-away materials. Meals are also included (breakfast, lunch, and refreshments provided each day). Hotel and travel expenses are not included, but discounted hotel rates are available.

An Early Bird rate of $1,260 is available for any application received by 11:59pm on June 14, 2019. Early Bird rates will become invalid if payment is not received by your invoiced payment deadline. You will be re-invoiced at the full Institute rate and your space at the Institute will not be guaranteed until payment is received in full.

*Discounted per-person rates are to organizations who have sent staff for Master Training at prior Institutes. Inquire with HPP.

Master Trainer Certification is a multi-step process that begins with submission of the application. Once your application is received, you will be immediately redirected to the online pre-test, which tests your basic knowledge of the core tenets of the Best Friends™ approach. Please be prepared to take the pre-test when submitting your application (allow approximately 20–30 minutes to complete both steps). Because this is a master-level training, attendees are required to score 80% or above on the pre-test. If you have worked in a care setting following Best Friends practices or read The Best Friends Approach to Dementia Care or other Best Friends books, you should be comfortable with the topics on this pre-test.

Applicants who pass the pre-test will receive confirmation and an invoice for the registration fee. Payment is due within 10 days of invoice date or by August 23, 2019, whichever comes first. Registration will not be complete until payment has been received. Your place at the Institute is not reserved until all steps of the registration are completed. All registrations will be confirmed by e-mail.

A limited number of rooms at the Graduate Hotel Annapolis have been reserved for this event at a discounted rate for September 8−12, which are available on a first come, first served basis until August 26, 2019. The group code for this room block is HPP908. To reserve online, visit the hotel website, select arrival and departure dates, click the Promo Code dropdown, select Group Rates, and enter the group code. The rate is $159/night for a single/double room with two queen or one king bed (does not include applicable state and local taxes, surcharges, parking, or other incidental fees). The discounted rate is also applicable for 3 days prior to and 3 days after the block dates based on availability. Reservations made after August 26, 2019, are subject to availability and the prevailing commercial rates. Guests who check out early will be charged 50% of the room rate. Parking is available for $18/day.

The Graduate Hotel Annapolis is walking distance from the historic downtown Annapolis and waterfront. It is served by several area airports, including Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and Dulles International Airport (IAD). Attendees are responsible for the arrangements and cost for their accommodations and transportation.

Deadlines & Cancellations

Should you be unable to attend the Institute after registering, you must notify HPP no later than August 23, 2019, via mail, fax, or e-mail in order to receive a 75% credit (or refund if already paid in full). Applicants registered for attendance who need to cancel on or before August 23, 2019 remain responsible for 25% of the registration fee to cover costs associated with pre-test administration and materials preparation; if not already pre-paid, applicants will be invoiced for this processing fee. Registrants who cancel after August 23, 2019 or are no-shows will be held responsible for the full amount of their registration fee.

Although no credits or refunds will be available after August 23, 2019, organizations may choose to send qualified substitutes, pending HPP approval and space permitting. Substitutes must:

  1. Submit a completed application to HPP, and
  2. Pass the qualifying pre-test, and
  3. Receive approval from HPP for attendance at least 5 business days in advance of the Institute

Health Professions Press reserves the right to cancel the training and will inform registrants by July 15, 2019. In such event, full refunds of the registration fee will be issued; HPP will not refund for expenses above the cost of registration.
